Seawater Greenhouse
According to a Protocol of Intentions Agreement signed between
the Government and Daniel Grepne on 03 April 1996: the Grepne family
will have the right to establish 4 water wells for an indefinite
period to supply tourism related investments. The water from the
wells will be purified for human consumption. Sewage wastewater
will also be purified, but used for the irrigation of the resort
site only.
Eventually, the 4 water wells will have to be closed down to be
replaced by an alternative water provision scheme. The Grepne family
also has plans to develop a 'Seawater Greenhouse' which uses renewable
energy to produce drinking water from the condensation of humidified
air within a greenhouse, which in turn produces high-value horticultural
produce.
One greenhouse covering a surface area of 5,000m2 should produce
210m3 of freshwater per day, enough for a 200-room hotel and also
all the vegetables required by the hotel with excess for sale. Some
live-stock farming will also be included in this project. The Total
Capital Investment Required for the Seawater Greenhouse is estimated
to be about USD$1.5 million with the ability to reach economic break-even
point within 3 years of operation.
